On Tuesday, newly elected Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced that Louisiana would be expanding Medicaid. This will be effective July 1, 2016. This brings the total to 32 for the number of states that have or will be expanding Medicaid. (See the Kaiser Family Foundation map below for a breakdown of which states have expanded.) A recent analysis done by the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated that 290,000 people in Louisiana would be eligible if the state expanded Medicaid.
