The Kaiser Family Foundation has released a new issue brief which looks at the tax penalty for not fulfilling the requirements of the individual mandate by not having minimum essential coverage through a qualified health plan. The penalty per adult for the first year of open enrollment was $95 per adult and increased to $325 in 2015. For 2016, the penalty will go up even more to $695 per adult and for a household will go up to potentially $2,085 ($695 per adult plus $347.50 per child with $2,085 as the maximum). As explained in the brief, this tax penalty can go even higher for some higher wage earners.
