A new study by the Commonwealth Fund looks at the financial cost to consumers in states who have not expanded Medicaid. The study entitled “How Much Financial Protection Do Marketplace Plans Provide in States Not Expanding Medicaid?” points out that lack of Medicaid expansion hurts not only those below the federal poverty level (FPL) but those who are above FPL but would still be eligible for Medicaid had their state expanded. These consumers are subject to much higher cost-sharing requirements than their counterparts in states where Medicaid has been expanded and the report goes into detail on these additional costs which these consumers face.
