CMS Report Shows Decrease in Premiums for 2019

October 11, 2018 by NDNRC

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a report today which shows a decrease in premiums of approximately 1.5% for the second lowest cost silver plans in the states operating on the federally facilitated marketplace. You can see CMS’s press release and the state-by-state chart showing what the premiums are in each state.

EDITORIAL NOTE: It should be noted that the uncertainty last year regarding the ACA’s future and the cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers caused many insurers to significantly increase their premiums for 2018. Looking at the overall increase from 2017 to 2019 shows an increase of nearly 35%. Any decrease this year can be explained as a simple market correction to last year’s excessive increase.
