AAHD PRESENTS TO YI SUMMIT

This week, Young Invincibles hosted their annual Outreach and Enrollment Summit. Yesterday, we presented as part of a panel entitled “Breaking Down Barriers: Addressing the Coverage Needs of Communities of Focus”. During the presentation, we highlighted important statistics which demonstrate the health disparities faced by the disability community, these include the fact that people with disabilities are:

  • 30% more likely to be obese
  • 60% more likely to smoke
  • 2.5 times more likely to develop diabetes
  • 3 times more likely to have cardiovascular disease
  • 2 times more likely not to see a doctor due to cost

To review the agenda or to view the recordings, go to the OE Summit event page.

During the Summit presentation we also highlighted our Fact Sheet on Disability Etiquette which offers guidance to navigators on communicating more effectively with people with disabilities as they are doing ACA enrollment.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is running their fall Beyond the Basics webinar series which provides training for assisters to prepare. Last week they conducted webinars on immigrant eligibility and plan design. This week they conducted a webinar on plan selection strategies. For a complete list of the dates and times for the entire webinar series, check out our news item which also has links for the slides and video recording of webinars which have been archived.

As part of our partnership with Community Catalyst, we have a project which highlights opportunities for people with disabilities to get access to health coverage through Medicaid or the ACA marketplace. As part of this project, they have graphics like the one below which highlight the special enrollment period for low-income individuals. These graphics are available in the Community Catalyst Outreach Hub.

Young Invincibles has announced a series of webinars which they will be conducting throughout the month of October designed to help new health insurance navigators and enrollment assisters get ready for the upcoming Open Enrollment Year 10 (OE10). These webinars are specifically intended to provide guidance for those who are new to enrollment work, but anyone who does enrollment work is welcome to attend. The topics, dates and links to register for these webinars can be found in our news item.

This week in the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families “Unwinding Wednesdays” blog post, they answer Medicaid unwinding FAQs.

Last month, the HHS Office for Civil Rights released proposed rules on the enforcement of ACA §1557, which makes discrimination in healthcare settings illegal as it relates to several minority groups, including the disability community. Those proposed rules are open for public comment through Monday, October 3.

Archives of our weekly updates are available on the NDNRC website.
