NEARLY 38 MILLION HAVE THEIR COVERAGE RENEWED
As of March 12, states have reported renewal outcomes for more than half of those enrolled in Medicaid/CHIP, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) with 37.6 million renewals still remaining. 19% of those who completed the renewal process were disenrolled and 38.3 million enrollees were able to qualify for renewed coverage. The large range of disenrollment rates in each state varies, with the highest of 57% being in Utah and the lowest of 13% in Main. Out of all states with available data, 70% of all those disenrolled were due to procedural reasons.
A report from the CHIRblog on the independent dispute resolution (IDR) process of binding arbitration in the No Surprises Act covers what data released on this process means for patients, payers, and health care costs. The report found that there was a substantial increase in IDR cases being resolved.
As the renewal process for Medicaid/CHIP continues, a staggering number of Americans still do not have health insurance. The Commonwealth Fund covered a potential solution that policy makers could use to address the amount of uninsured, specifically low-income, people in the U.S. – automatic enrollment.
KFF’s 2023 Consumer Survey of Consumer Experiences with Health Insurance found that cost barriers for dental coverage span across all coverage types, contributing to medical debt. This comes as no surprise as those over the age of 18 find dental coverage being excluded from the ACA’s major cost-sharing protections that apply to essential health benefits.
Recently, AAHD joined a coalition led by Community Catalyst and UNIDOS US and consisting of over 100 organizations in making recommendations to CMS about actions that could be taken to promote continuous Medicaid coverage during the Medicaid unwinding.
