OPEN ENROLLMENT BEGINS TODAY!

November 1, 2024 by Nuria Piracha

With record high enrollment due to the unwinding of Medicaid last year, we finally entered the 12th year of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace open enrollment! Get covered or make changes to existing plans today. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

  • December 15, 2024: the last day to enroll or change plans for coverage that starts on January 1, 2025
  • January 15: the official end of OE and last day to enroll in coverage that starts on February 1, 2024

Get prepared to get covered – four out of five Marketplace enrollees can find a plan for less than $10 per month! Visit HealthCare.Gov for more information.

As a part of our partnership with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, we have updated Factsheets 1 through 16, excluding Factsheet 6 in anticipation for Open Enrollment (OE)! Read an overall summary of relevant factsheets on our blog here.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a Marketplace 2025 OE factsheet. State-based factsheets can be found here: https://www.healthcare.gov/marketplace-in-your-state. This overall factsheet will cover:

  • The Marketplace Call Center
  • CMS-coordinated outreach
  • Local assistance
  • What consumers and advocates should know about state/consumer specific OE programs

The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) has covered ten major topics to monitor for the 2025 OE period. Topics to note are increases in premium tax credits, potential enhanced subsidies, new insurers for Marketplace enrollees, increased fraud prevention, changes in special enrollment opportunities, and new network rules.

Similarly, the Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families (CCF), came out with what is new for the OE plan year. Overall, there is an unprecedented record of enrollees this year with many new insurers taking part.

The Department of Health and Human Services noted that thanks to the expanded tax credits in the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, many enrollees will be qualified for $0 premiums or will see premium savings. Navigator organizations have also been greatly expanded and funded to help assist enrolled in affordable and accessible plans.

Use CMS’ partner tools and toolkits to conduct outreach for OE! This includes social media posts, images, scripts, themed weeks, webinars, and more! Outreach materials are available in multiple languages.

Check out previous Beyond the Basics “OE Webinar Series: Coverage Year 2025” to cover complex OE topics and questions with the help of policy subject matter experts to provide free and concise training for eligibility and enrollment to aid assisters.

The Commonwealth Fund released a blog on the importance of having updated measures to promote disability equity. These measures would help inform and evaluate policy and provide inclusive opportunities for this population.

KFF covered how Medicaid financing works alongside potential proposals to change it. After next week’s election, Medicaid could be weakened or strengthened, and it is important for people with disabilities to know the potential changes that could occur.

Keep up with vaccinations this flu season and be prepared with free at-home COVID-19 tests that are accessible for people who are blind or have low vision and those with low manual dexterity. Through the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and the United States Postal Service (USPS), test will be able to detect current COVID-19 variants and can be used through the end of 2024.
